Why Choose The Artist's Edition?
The author of any book has two basic choices facing them when looking to get published:
1. Use a conventional publisher. This has several advantages:
- The publisher, not you, takes the risk of publication
- You get paid an advance on royalties
- All of the logistics of publication and distribution are handled for you
But there are significant disadvantages:
- It is very difficult to get a publisher (especially for lower volume, more specialist works) unless you are already a published author or a celebrity
- Control of what is published (cover design, layout etc) is taken away from you
- Publication can take more than a year
- You get a royalty of less than 10% of the list price
- You still have to do all of the promotion yourself!
- Your book will very rapidly end up in the remainder bin if it doesn't sell well in the first three months after publication
2. You can self publish. This also has several advantages:
- You retain control of your work
- You can publish in your own timescale and remain in print
- All of the profit (if there is any) is yours to keep
But again there are significant disadvantages:
- Self-published works are viewed by most as inferior
- You take on all of the cost, and risk, of publication
- You need to deal with all of the details of publication rather than spending time on your art
- Print-on-demand, the main technology that enables cost-effective self-publication, is not applicable to art books because of the low print quality
